The Air Force is accepting applications to the Interservice Physician Assistant Program from enlisted and officer Airmen, U.S. Air Force Academy and Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets from Oct. 1, 2019, through Jan. 24, 2020. Applicants are responsible for preparing and submitting the required documents through the University of Nebraska Medical Center IPAP Centralized Application Service, or UNICAS. Video interview instructions and questions will be released around Oct. 1, 2019, and are due Feb. 14, 2020.
The Interservice Physician Assistant Program mission is to educate and train physician assistants for the uniformed services. The 29-month program is open to enlisted, officers and U.S. Air Force Academy and Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets.
The military services combined their various physician assistant programs to form the IPAP in 1996 at the Army Medical Department Center and School on Fort Sam Houston. The program includes 16 months of academic training followed by 13 months of clinical rotations at a military medical facility. Graduates of the program also earn a Master of Physician Assistant Studies degree from their affiliated university.

2020 IPAP Selection Board Results (Board is tentatively scheduled for April 2020)
The Air Force is accepting Intent to Apply submissions for the 2020 Academic Year from active-duty and Air Reserve Component Airmen for the Enlisted to Medical Degree Preparatory Program via myPers through Oct. 11, 2019. Completed EMDP2 applications are due Nov. 30, 2019.
The Enlisted to Medical Degree Preparatory Program, or EMDP2, offers enlisted Airmen in both the active and air reserve components an opportunity to complete the preparatory coursework for admission to medical school while maintaining active duty status, or “cadet man-years” for Reserve or Guard selects, with full pay and benefits. The program, which incurs a three-year active duty service commitment, includes coursework in a traditional classroom setting with structured pre-health advising and formal medical college admission test preparation.
Changes in effect for Academic Year 2020:
Airmen selected for the two-year program transfer on permanent change of station orders to Bethesda, Maryland, where they attend school full-time at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences where tuition and associated academic costs will be funded by the Air Force.
Following successful completion of the program, graduates will apply for acceptance to the USUHS medical school and/or civilian medical schools. Once accepted for an approved medical school, participants will be commissioned as second lieutenants in the Medical Services Corps. As fourth year medical students, those lieutenants will be eligible to apply for medical residencies approved by the Air Force Health Professions Education Requirements Board.

The Air Force’s Personnel Center will process the applications from active-duty enlisted Airman for the Nurse Enlisted and Direct Enlisted Commissioning Programs. Selection boards are typically held annually in April.
NECP offers the opportunity to earn a baccalaureate degree in nursing at a college or university with an Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps detachment or a college or university with a "cross-town agreement." Applicants are required to attend school year-round in a resident-based program for up to 24 consecutive calendar months, to include summer sessions. Airmen selected by the NECP board will start school the fall after the selection board meets.
The DEC program allows Airmen to commission into the Nurse Corps if they already possess a nursing degree and have passed the National Council Licensure Examination, or NCLEX.
To be considered for the NECP or DECP boards, applicants must be U.S. citizens with a minimum rank of **airman first class for NECP and senior airman for DECP. Applicants should have no more than 10 years total active federal service (12 years for DECP) as of April 30 of the board year, but **this requirement is now waiverable. In addition, Airmen must meet time-on-station and retainability requirements, possess current security clearances, be worldwide qualified and commissioned by **age 49 for NECP and 41 for DECP.
Also new for the NECP 2019 academic year is the **deletion of the math and science grade point average minimum requirement. Instead, applicants must meet the minimum GPA requirement of the accepted nationally accredited nursing school. Another AY19 change: **scholarships caps were bumped up from $15,000 to $18,000.
Upon successful completion of their degrees, Airmen who pass the NCLEX and receive their nursing licenses will be commissioned. Both DEC and NECP candidates will then attend Commissioned Officer Training and the Nurse Transition Program, and move to a final assignment location.
