AF announces virtual In-System Supplemental promotions

The December In-System Supplemental release, scheduled for Dec. 13 at 8 a.m. CST, will be the first use of the virtual enlisted promotion release for monthly in-system releases.

The Air Force went to virtual notification Nov. 14 with the release of the chief master sergeant list. More than 400 selected for chief logged in to learn of the news on the Air Force Personnel Center Web site. Senior Master Sgt. James Stadler said the process was nerve-racking as he logged in with 20 co-workers gathered around.

Air Force announces selections to major

The 2007A line of the Air Force, biomedical sciences corps, nurse corps and medical service corps central selection board selected 2,535 captains for promotion.

The complete select list is available on the Air Force Personnel Center public Web site at http://www.afpc.randolph.af.mil.

Astronaut applications available for May board

Active duty Air Force members have the opportunity to compete for pilot and mission specialist crew positions with the nation's space program through the Air Force Astronaut nomination program.

Air Force nominees will compete with representatives from the other services for the chance to become an astronaut candidate and serve with NASA. Applications must be postmarked for the Air Force Personnel Center by Feb. 25.

The Air Force astronaut nomination selection board convenes here May 13-16 to select nominees. An Air Force medical screening panel will then determine whether or not the nominees meet NASA physical standards.

Thrift investment board sets 2008 TSP contribution limits

The Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board has announced that 2008's elective deferral limit for regular TSP contributions is $15,500, which is the same for 2007.

In addition, contributions for the catch-up plan will remain at the same $5,000 limit set in 2006 and 2007.

"TSP is a long-term retirement savings plan, which everyone should consider," said Janet Thomas, a human resources specialist at the Air Force Personnel Center here. "It's a great supplement to military and civilian retirement plans."

Services program manager nets new A1 award

He provided around-the-clock assistance to more than 200 families who suffered the loss of an active-duty member, mentored 25 Airmen seriously injured or wounded in action, and was appointed by the secretary of defense to serve on the Independent Review Group at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

These are just some of the accolades that helped John Beckett, the Air Force's Survivor Assistance Program manager at the Pentagon, earn the first 2007 Roger M. Blanchard Memorial Award for Character and Innovation.

AF begins NCO retraining program involuntary phase

Airmen identified as required to retrain must submit a retraining request by Dec. 17 or separate from the Air Force under Phase II of the Air Force Fiscal 2008 Noncommissioned Officer Retraining Program.

After meeting the Dec. 17 deadline, Phase II eligibles must next choose an Air Force specialty code from a list of available AFSCs and submit a completed retraining application by Jan. 31.

Any Airman identified as vulnerable for retraining and who fails to submit the initial retraining application by this date will be determined to have officially declined retraining and will be separated from the Air Force on their current date of separation.

PERSCO teams do more than track 'boots on the ground'

Every commander needs to know who is in the field and how those numbers affect Air Force readiness -- in short, how many "boots are on the ground." The Personnel Support for Contingency Operations team's mission is to maintain deployed accountability and casualty reporting for all deployed Airman filling those boots.

"It's vital for commanders to know mission capabilities," said Vince Fonner, the chief of Personnel Readiness Division at the Air Force Personnel Center at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas. "Our PERSCO teams verify who is in the field by name, Air Force Specialty Code, grade, gender and other factors. Thanks to our teams, we know who's there."

AFPC to conduct force shaping board

The next force shaping board is scheduled to convene March 31 at the Air Force Personnel Center here for some lieutenants in the 2005 year group.

The board will evaluate active-duty line officers in overage career fields in the 2005 accession year group, except for officers in the intelligence, security forces, civil engineer, and public affairs career fields.

Retention recommendation forms (RRFs) must be completed for all board eligible officers with more than two years extended active duty as of March 31, 2008, and less than 15 years total active federal service as of Aug. 31, 2008. The RRF will include senior rater recommendations to retain or separate, and must be forwarded to AFPC no later than Feb. 4.

AF accepting physician assistant applications

The Air Force is taking applications from active duty enlisted Airmen for Physician Assistant Phase I training classes beginning January, April and August 2009.

Completed applications must arrive at HQ AFPC/DPAMW, 550 C Street West, Suite 27, Randolph AFB TX 78150-4729 no later than Jan. 25. The selection board is scheduled to convene at the Air Force Personnel Center here March 19.

Incomplete applications or those received after the cutoff date will be returned and will not meet the selection board, according to AFPC officials.

AF accepting applications for PFE project support

The Air Force is accepting nomination packages until Dec. 14 to select subject matter experts for three performance fitness examination projects beginning in March 2008.

Nominees must be a chief or senior master sergeant, or a senior master sergeant select with documented outstanding duty performance in supervisory, management and leadership positions.

Each major command may submit four to six Airmen except Air Force Special Operations Command may submit two to four Airmen and Air Force Reserve Command may submit one or two Airmen. Field operating agencies, direct reporting units and joint commands may each submit one or two Airmen.

Personnel Center to deployers: Don't leave without your guide

Most Air Force members being deployed to a foreign country have little knowledge of the culture they'll work in for the next four to 12 months. They don't know a Hijab from an Abaya or a Dishdasha from a Gutra. How many times a day can you say hello to someone in Kyrgystan? Why can't you eat with your left hand?

Perhaps even more important, how do deployed leaders find information about the AEF Life Cycle, Alternate Battle Rhythms, the AEF Pivot Date, Contingency Response Groups and even Field Sanitation? It's all in the guide.

Applicants sought for attache duty

The Air Force is accepting applications until Dec. 7, 2007 from senior captains, majors and lieutenant colonels to fill 18 air attache positions reporting June 2009 through August 2011.

Officers selected for attache duty will attend training during the period of April 2008 to January 2009.

An operations background, foreign language skills and experience in the region are all highly desired for attache candidates.

AF seeks 10 enlisted for AFIT degree program

Air Force Institute of Technology officials are offering 10 noncommissioned officers the opportunity to pursue an advanced science, engineering or management degree at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.

Ten NCOs from around the Air Force will be selected in February 2008 to attend the Enlisted-to-AFIT program. The program is designed to provide commanders with a diverse and renewable source of highly proficient and educated career NCOs.

AF's formal training to centralize at AFPC

Scheduling of all Air Force directed formal training historically accomplished by major command personnel and manpower directorates is being centralized at the Air Force Personnel Center here to streamline services and make maximum use of Air Force resources.

Formal training includes all Air Force-level supplemental training (security, communications, electronics, etc.) and instruction at 7-level in-resident schools, as well as training at in-resident senior NCO and NCO academies.

For the first time, 416 senior master sergeants will soon learn of their promotion to chief master sergeant online as the Air Force moves to virtual promotions notification.
The complete select list will be available Nov. 14 at 8 a.m. on the Air Force Personnel Center public Web site at http://www.afpc.randolph.af.mil. Virtual notification is part of the Air Force's personnel services delivery concept to provide Airmen the information they need when they need it.

Partnership offers Airmen 'better business' support

Building on the service's efforts to educate Airmen on consumer-related issues, the Air Force began an official partnership with the Council of Better Business Bureaus recently.

The partnership encourages Airmen and their families to use the bureau's free programs, services and materials while paving the way for new jointly-developed information and services targeted to the unique needs and concerns of the Air Force audience.

"This partnership strengthens the Air Force's ongoing efforts to educate Airmen consumers and adds a measure of visibility that connects Air Force bases with the local communities," said Scott Hand, community readiness consultant at the Air Force Personnel Center here. "The Better Business Bureau has unique knowledge of local marketplaces across the United States that can help our military consumers find trustworthy businesses to deal with."

Personnel Center public Web site joins AFLINK Nov. 2

The Air Force Personnel Center's new public Web site, www.afpc.randolph.af.mil, will go live as part of Air Force Link, the official Web site of the U.S. Air Force on Nov. 2.

The public site will feature AFPC mission information of interest to the general public along with information on civilian employment, personnel records requests, Worldwide Locator Service, Air Force Casualty Services and more.

Air Force personnel seeking detailed personnel information should update their Web browsers to http://ask.afpc.randolph.af.mil where such information will be available for military and Defense Department civilians.

Open season begins Nov. 12 for civilian benefits programs

The Office of Personnel Management has announced an open season will be held Nov. 12 through Dec. 10 for three civilian benefit programs.

The three programs are the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program, the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program, and the Federal Flexible Spending Account Program.

Federal Employees Health Benefits
Premiums for 2008 will rise an average of 2 percent for the second consecutive year. There are 283 plan choices in 2008, one less than in 2007; 13 plans dropped out and 12 new plans are joining. The number of high deductible health plans is increasing to 32, up from 29 in 2007.

Officers, civilians selected for developmental education

More than 950 officers and civilians were recently selected to attend intermediate and senior developmental education programs during the academic 2008-09 year, Air Force Personnel Center officials announced.

The list of primaries and alternates will be posted to the Air Force Portal, force development community of practice no earlier than Oct. 19.

The Developmental Education Designation Board met Oct. 10-11 to select line and non-line officers and civilians to attend in-residence developmental education.
