air force family
The Air Force Missing Persons Branch at the Air Force Personnel Center serves as the liaison between government agencies and Air Force Prisoners of War/Missing in Action family members. Branch personnel administer the Air Force hostile and non-hostile missing persons program, and serve as a liaison between the Air Force, the U.S. government and the next of kin of all unaccounted-for Air Force personnel.
The Air Force Missing Persons Branch collects, evaluates and disseminates to next of kin and other interested government agencies all information and reports concerning Airmen who are unaccounted-for from our nation's conflicts.
The Missing Persons Branch operates hand in hand with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, Armed Forces DNA Laboratory, U.S. Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operations and the Defense Intelligence Agency. It also maintains contact with family organizations such as the National League of POW/MIA Families and the Coalition of Families of Korean and Cold War POW/MIAs. These Air Force personnel respond to casualty-related congressional and other high-level inquiries, and write advisories for the Air Force Board for Correction of Military Records.
The Missing Persons Branch serves as the focal point of contact for the next of kin of unaccounted-for service members from the Korean War, Cold War and the Vietnam Conflict, in addition to any current day operations. The office has maintained contact with families of unaccounted-for Airmen over the years since the Korean War and currently maintains contact with about 3,500 family members.
The Air Force Missing Persons Branch is the point of contact for members of the public requesting assistance in forwarding a Vietnam POW/MIA bracelet they have worn to the service member's family. Anyone wishing to contact Air Force POW/MIA service members or their family to return a bracelet may forward the bracelet to the following address with a cover letter explaining the request. The Missing Persons Branch will forward the bracelet to the service member or the family.

If branch personnel are unable to forward the bracelet, it will either be returned to the requesting individual or included in a POW/MIA display case in the Air Force’s Missing Persons Branch office at AFPC.
Throughout the year, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency and Military Service Casualty Office representatives provide periodic updates and briefings for families of American service members and civilians who are still unaccounted-for from our nation's past conflicts. The events are designed to provide family members a forum to meet with government officials and hear briefings on the U.S. government's worldwide mission to account for those still missing and receive up-to-date information on their specific case. The DPAA Family Update Schedule is located at http://www.dpaa.mil/Families/Family-Events/.
Two briefings are held annually in the Washington, D.C. area: one for Vietnam War families and a second for Korean and Cold War families. These meetings are typically two to three day events and are held in the National Capital Region to allow for senior government officials to attend and to give families access to Washington-based, U.S. government offices related to POW/MIA matters as well as their respective state representatives offices.
For questions and concerns, contact the Air Force Service Casualty Office at 800-531-5501 or email AFPC.DPFC.POW.MIA@us.af.mil.
More than 82,000 Americans are still unaccounted-for from World War II, the Korean War, the Cold War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf Wars and other conflicts. To learn more about the DPAA mission, individual profiles of the unaccounted-for, as well as information on Americans recently accounted-for, please visit the DPAA website at http://www.dpaa.mil/.
