Spouse Education and Career Opportunities

Military spouses are a tremendous source of strength and talent, with the ability to navigate the unique challenges of military life. They work to maintain a home and keep their families strong and resilient, often while pursuing an education or striving to build a meaningful career. Frequent relocations and extended deployments make this pursuit challenging. While military spouses are well-educated and highly-qualified for a wide range of careers, they experience a significant unemployment rate and wage gap compared to their civilian counterparts.


To help military spouses reach their education and career goals as they balance work-life priorities and interests, the Department of Defense established a comprehensive, holistic, spouse-centered program called Spouse Education and Career Opportunities (SECO).


Program resources include the following:

The Military OneSource Spouse Career Center, where certified Career Counselors provide free, comprehensive counseling services to all eligible military spouses.

The Military Spouse Employment Partnership, a targeted recruitment and employment solution that creates employment connections by providing companies and organizations with direct access to military spouses seeking career opportunities and connecting spouses with employers who are actively recruiting.

The My Career Advancement Account Scholarship program, a workforce development program that provides a maximum tuition benefit of $4,000 with an annual fiscal year cap of $2,000 to eligible military spouses, who have completed high school, to pursue a license, certification or associate degree in a portable career field and occupation

The MySECO website, where eligible military spouses have 24/7 access to online education and career information, resources, tools and assessments. This website is a one-stop source where spouses can research occupations, search for schools and scholarships, find education and career information, search for employment and develop their individual career plan, or MyICP, to set goals and chart progress in building a meaningful career path.



Each military service branch plays a major role in supporting a military spouse’s education and career progression, and provides installation-based programs and services to any spouse from any service. At installation employment readiness program centers, spouses can receive face-to-face assistance and advice on career readiness, employment opportunities, education and scholarship opportunities, and job search strategies.


To find the contact information for any of the installation employment readiness programs, spouses can visit the MilitaryINSTALLATIONS website. On the site, spouses can search by the specific program (Spouse Education, Training and Careers) and an installation or postal code to find the office closest to them. Program names may vary between branches, but they all provide quality services.

The Air Force announced today new rules on Operational Camouflage Pattern uniforms that aim to better fit the needs of Airmen and the jobs they do while also holding fast to tradition. The Follow-On assignment program allows Airmen who are selected for a short, dependent-restricted tour to apply for advanced consideration of a CONUS assignment or overseas tour BEFORE the Airman's departure. Airmen apply for Follow-On assignments via vMPF after their initial relocation briefing. If you have questions or concerns, you should consult with your MPS for further details. Nominations for the Combat Air Forces Squadron Commander Selection Board are due to the CAF Development Team Advisor by July 19. The board will select candidates to fill projected commander vacancies in CAF flying and non-flying squadrons, Operations Support Squadrons, Air Support Operations Squadrons, Air Control Squadrons and Guardian Angel Rescue Squadrons. CYCLE WINDOW FOR EQUAL OSR/CMM IS OPEN The CONUS to CONUS Assignment program has expanded for the April 2019 assignment cycle to include eligible First-Term Airmen and Security Forces Airmen. From April 16 – 26, these Airmen may now request an assignment between CONUS locations, provided they are otherwise eligible: • First-Term Airmen who have a Career Job Reservation and have been selected for reenlistment • Career Airmen who have at least 48 months’ time on station as of August 2019 • Airmen in the Security Forces career field (3P) AFPC sent targeted messages to all eligible Airmen that included cutoff dates and links for application submission. CONUS assignment requests will be considered in the following priority order: Overseas Returnees-OSR, CONUS Mandatory Movers-CMM and then CONUS volunteers. These programmatic changes do not include nor affect any other assignment programs at this time, nor will they impact Battlefield Airman (now Special Warfare Airmen) or Enlisted Aircrew. April 2019 enlisted in-system supplemental promotion list Congratulations to the 47 Airmen selected today for promotion via the enlisted in-system supplemental promotion process. There were 19 Airmen in the 18E5 cycle, three Airmen in the 18E6 cycle, two Airmen for 18E7, 20 for 19E8 and three for 18E9. The in-system supplemental is processed monthly in the Weighted Airman Promotion System to allow eligible staff sergeants through senior master sergeants to compete monthly for promotion consideration if weighable data changes in their promotion file. In-system supplemental consideration also applies to Airmen who test after initial promotion selections have been made, deployed Airmen, or anyone who was unable to test during their normal testing window.
