Air Force now taking applications for summer jobs

RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, Texas --  The Air Force is ramping up for the upcoming season by advertising hundreds of job vacancies online that support the annual summer employment program.

Qualified individuals can apply online at USAJOBS.gov for various positions, including office automation and computer clerks, laborers, lifeguards and recreation aides. Most summer jobs are classified into pay grades 1-4. The job announcement will indicate pay potential.

To be considered for a summer position, an individual must meet at least one of the following criteria: be eligible for the Student Temporary Employment Program, have Veteran Recruitment Appointment eligibility, be a documented 30 percent disabled veteran, or have reinstatement status.

STEP applicants must, at a minimum, be enrolled in an accredited high school or enrolled/accepted for enrollment as degree-seeking students, taking at least a half-time course load in an accredited technical, vocational, two- or four-year college or university, or graduate or professional school.

For Veteran Recruitment Appointment eligibility, the individual must be a disabled veteran; or a veteran who served on active duty in the Armed Forces during a war, or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized; or veterans who, while serving on active duty in the Armed Forces, participated in a United States military operation for which an Armed Forces Service Medal was awarded; or recently separated veteran.

To qualify under the veterans' 30 percent disabled hiring authority, individuals must have served in the military, be able to produce proof of service and disability (DD Form 214 Member 4 copy and VA Disability Rating), and have a service-connected disability of 30 percent or more.

Individuals have reinstatement status when they are former career/career-conditional federal civil service employees.

The summer hire positions are temporary appointments that are scheduled to end Oct. 2, 2010. Depending on the physical requirements of the position, a physical exam may be required.

To find a position, job hunters can enter the job title, such as "lifeguard," into the key word search, along with the city or state in which they are interested. Students can also search by clicking on the word "Student" at the bottom of the USAJOBS home page.

To apply for a vacancy, users must create a free USAJOBS account. From there, they will have the ability to build and save up to five different resumes, submitting the resume that is most reflective of the skills needed for the jobs in which they are interested.

Not all bases will have summer hire positions available.

USAJOBS can be accessed by computer or smart phone 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
