Air Force announces 2014 Sijan award winners

Air Force officials have announced the winners of the 2014 Lance P. Sijan Leadership Award.

The Lance P. Sijan Leadership Award is named in honor of the late Capt. Lance P. Sijan, an Air Force Academy graduate and combat pilot, who was posthumously, awarded the Medal of Honor for his intrepidity while evading capture by the North Vietnamese and during his subsequent captivity as a POW. The Sijan Award annually recognizes four Airmen who demonstrate outstanding leadership abilities. Officer and enlisted honorees are chosen in senior and junior categories.

Senior Officer Category

Lt. Col. Stephen Matthews, 49th Air Refueling Squadron, Air Mobility Command, McConnell Air Force Base, Kansas.

Junior Officer Category

Capt. John Sullivan, 509th Security Forces Squadron, Air Force Global Strike Command, Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri.

Senior Enlisted Category

Master Sgt. Janell McGivern, 823rd Maintenance Squadron, Air Combat Command, Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada.

Junior Enlisted Category

Senior Airman Tristan Windle, 320th Special Tactics Squadron, Air Force Special Operations Command, Kadena Air Base, Japan.
