The Air Force Personnel Center mission is to put the right person in the right place at the right time. April 30, Col. David Slade and the assignments directorate took that mission outside the gates when they volunteered to help Habitat for Humanity put the right family in the right house at the right time.

Founded in 1976, Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio has worked with churches, community service groups, and other volunteers to build more than 700 homes for low income families. Relying on volunteer labor and support, Habitat is able to provide zero-interest, low cost homes for people in need.

In addition to 20 volunteers from the AFPC assignments directorate, dozens of Air Force security forces technical school students covered the roofs and filled the rooms of the Habitat homes underway in the San Antonio Palo Alto subdivision.

Colonel Slade and his team, which included directorate members and families, spent their day putting up siding, painting, and roofing a home that would soon be ready for occupation. While none of the volunteers are professional homebuilders, Habitat supervisors were on hand to offer initial instruction and occasional tips.

"We love it when the military comes out and assists," said Sarah Arredondo, Habitat for Humanity San Antonio volunteer coordinator. "It's a great day when the military come out. They do so much work and get us on track when we're behind. When we're on track, they get us ahead of schedule," she added.

According to Colonel Slade, this project wasn't just an opportunity to build a home for a family in need, although that would have been reason enough, he said. It was also a chance to build directorate morale.

"This was a good opportunity to support the community, build morale, and ensure we volunteered for an event and a time when military and civilians could all participate," said Colonel Slade. "Those who attended had a great time, and we would recommend this as a good project for other directorates," he said.
