Warrior CARE event Jan. 19-22 on Randolph Published Jan. 19, 2016 By Janis El Shabazz Air Force Personnel Center Public Affairs JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas -- More than 120 wounded, ill or injured service men and women from across the nation are gathering here today through Jan. 22 for a Warrior CARE event. Warrior CARE events provide seriously wounded, ill and injured military members, veterans and their caregivers access to services such as caregiver support training, adaptive and rehabilitative sports, recovering airman mentorship training and employment and career readiness guidance along with music and art therapy. This event, hosted in coordination with Maj. Gen. Peggy Poore, Air Force Personnel Center commander, will give participants the opportunity to train and compete in sports including wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, swimming, air pistol and rifle shooting, archery, rowing and cycling as well as track-and-field competitions including shot-put, discus and running events. The event includes a wheelchair rugby exhibition on Wednesday, January 20th. "The adaptive & rehabilitative sports help the recovering service members draw strength from their shared struggle on the journey to recovery, but Warrior Care events are about so much more than sports," said Marsha Gonzales, deputy chief, Air Force Personnel Center Warrior Care Division. "We provide personalized services focused on the specific needs of the recovering service members and caregivers at each camp." The event will close on Jan. 22 with a sitting volleyball and wheelchair basketball competition between Air Force Wounded Warriors as well as members of the Airman Medical Transition Unit from Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas. Following the final competition those in attendance will be treated to a musical performance by Rock to Recovery and Air Force Wounded Warriors led by former Korn guitarist Wesley Geer.
