1,300-plus selected for promotion to Lt Col, Col

7/17/2013 - JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas -- The 2013A Colonel Line of the Air Force-Judge Advocate and Lieutenant Colonel LAF/LAF-J Central Selection Boards selected 18 lieutenant colonels and 1,350 majors for promotion during the March board held here.

Promotion results will be posted on the Air Force Portal and the myPers websites tomorrow, July 18, Air Force Personnel Center officials said. To see the list tomorrow, go to, select "search all components," and enter "officer promotions" in the search window, or log on to the Air Force Portal.

The boards considered 133 lieutenant colonels and 7,288 majors, with the following results:

Promotion to Colonel
In the promotion zone:
LAF-J - 16 selected from 30 considered for 53.3 percent select rate

Above the promotion zone:
LAF-J - 1 selected from 35 considered for 2.9 percent select rate

Below the promotion zone:
LAF-J - 1 selected from 68 considered for 1.5 percent select rate

Promotion to Lieutenant Colonel
In the promotion zone:
LAF - 1,142 selected from 1,535 considered for 74.4 percent select rate
LAF-J - 42 selected from 52 considered for 80.8 percent select rate

Above-the-promotion zone:
LAF - 33 selected from 1,367 considered for 2.4 percent select rate
LAF-J - 2 selected from 26 considered for 7.7 percent select rate

Below-the-promotion zone:
LAF - 130 selected from 4,186 considered for 3.1 percent select rate
LAF-J - 1 selected from 122 considered for 0.8 percent select rate

Officer promotion rates are high because for the vast majority there is only one shot to make it. Enlisted promotion and officer promotion are two different animals and comparing the statistics between the two isn't going to provide any real insight.

Another example of a flawed promotion system for officers. Just reviewed the promotion stats on my pers and found out that 6 DP's were given for the BPZ and 13 DP's given given in IPZ for officers who hadn't completed either IDE or an advanced degree. That's 19 DP's essentially wasted on someone who didn't bother to check the necessary squares. Senior raters continue to fail their officers.

Glad to see that officers maintained a high promotion rate. Too bad the back bone of the air force gets hammered repeatedly. And we wonder why retention rates are nose diving...
