Eligible Airmen may now apply for nuclear deterrence medal Published Oct. 14, 2014 By Debbie Gildea Air Force Personnel Center Public Affairs JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas -- Airmen who meet eligibility criteria may now submit an application for the newly approved Nuclear Deterrence Operations Service Medal, Air Force officials announced. Eligibility is retroactive to Dec. 27, 1991 for active duty, Air National Guard, Air Force Reserve, retired and separated Airmen and family of deceased Airmen. Airmen who qualify for the medal can apply on the myPers website (https://mypers.af.mil). Basic medal eligibility The medal may be awarded to Airmen who were assigned, deployed or mobilized to a unit (wing, center or below) in support of the Nuclear Enterprise for 120 consecutive days or 179 nonconsecutive days; were subject to a nuclear inspection or performed duties in one of the following: Nuclear Operations Nuclear Weapon Storage Facilities Nuclear Command, Control and Communication Cyber Surety Security Safety Transportation Maintenance Facility Management and Maintenance Explosive Ordnance Disposal Aircrew Certified for Support to Nuclear Operations Weapons Loaders Warning and Attack Assessment Personnel Reliability Program Management Research Development and Acquisition of Nuclear Systems "N" device eligibility An "N" will be worn by Airmen who dispatched to a missile complex for 179 nonconsecutive days in direct support of intercontinental ballistic missile operations and performed duties in one of the following Air Force specialty codes: 21MX, 2M0XX - Missile Maintenance 2W0XX, 2W1XX, 2W2XX - Munitions and Maintenance 31PX, 3P0XX - Security Forces (security forces who guard nuclear laden aircraft are eligible) 3M0XX - Services 2F0XX - Fuels 2T1XX, 2T3XX - Transportation 32EX, 3EXXX - Civil Engineering 3D1X1, 3D1X2, 3D1X3, 3D100 - Cyberspace Support 11HXC, 13NX, 1A9X1, and13SX - Operations (officers on or before Feb. 9, 2013) 8S000 - Missile Facility Manager The "N" device is also authorized for Airmen who performed duties in direct support of nuclear laden aircraft to include nuclear certified aircrew, aircraft maintenance technicians, munitions maintenance technicians, combat crew communications, nuclear certified controllers and security forces performing guard duties. Only one "N" device will be worn, regardless of the number of qualifying assignments. An oak leaf cluster will be worn for subsequent awards of the basic medal which will only be authorized when a permanent change of station has occurred. Nomination Process Applications for the NDOSM must be accompanied by applicable supporting documents such as contingency exercise deployment orders, paid travel vouchers, evaluations, decoration citations, PRP qualification/certification action documents, letters of evaluation or the Department of Defense Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty. Airmen currently serving (in the qualifying unit or formerly assigned to a qualifying unit) must submit an Air Force Form 104, Service Medal Award Verification, to their current group commander (colonel or civilian equivalent) or higher. The group commander will certify that the Airman's duty service has been honorable and route the form through the servicing military personnel section to update the Airman's record. Former active duty Airmen who have retired or separated, or the surviving family members of active duty Airmen who have died, may submit a Standard Form 180, Request Pertaining to Military Records, with supporting documents, to the Air Force Personnel Center at the following address: AFPC/DPSIDR, 550 C Street, Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph TX 78150. Former Guard and Reserve Airmen who have retired or separated, or the surviving family members of Guard or Reserve Airmen who have died, may submit an SF 180 with supporting documents to the Air Reserve Personnel Center by "creating an incident" in myPers.
