Explosive Ordnance Disposal

This article contains information on the Critical Skills Retention Bonus (CSRB) Designation for the 3E8X1 - Explosive Ordnance Disposal.



  • Airmen must be in Explosive Ordnance Disposal (3E8X1) Air Force Specialty

  • Must be in pay grade of MSgt (E-7) or SMSgt (E-8)

  • Airmen must have completed at least 20 years of service, but not more than 22 years of service and be otherwise eligible to reenlist in accordance with AFI 36-2606, Reenlistment and Extension of Enlistment in the United States Air Force 

  • Airmen may execute a CSRB reenlistment option at any time during their enlistment. Remaining obligated service is waived as long as they are not currently serving on a CSRB or Selective Reenlistment Bonus (SRB) contract. Although an Airman may receive more than one CSRB over a career, he/she may not receive more than $200,000 in total CSRB payments. Note: Airmen are allowed to project reenlistment 6 months in advance

  • CSRB contracts must be no less than three years and not more than five years and will be paid in accordance with the years of service indicated in paragraph 6 below. CSRB contract may not extend an Airman’s service obligation beyond his/her mandatory retirement date or 25 years of Active Duty, whichever is less

  • Airmen must have a service-directed reason according to AFI 36-2606, Table 6.2 to extend; the extension must be for 36 months or more. Airmen may not extend for a partial year (i.e., if Airmen extend 35 months or less, they are not eligible for the CSRB. Likewise, if Airmen extend 37 months, the entitlement will be paid for 36 months only). Airmen may elect to extend for a longer period even though less retainability is required in order to qualify for this CSRB

  • High Year Tenure (HYT) for MSgts who accept a CSRB at 20 years of service or more will have their HYT waived up to 25 years of service

  • Airmen will serve in the CSRB skill and incur an Active Duty Service Commitment (ADSC) for the full period of the reenlistment or extension contract agreement according to the eligibility criteria stated above. The ADSC will be based on the years reenlisting and not on the full reenlistment contract (for example, if Airman reenlists for four years and has eight months of non-bonus obligated service, Airman will receive CSRB for four years and the ADSC will be updated for four years)


Military Personnel Section (MPS) must process payment in the Case Management System (CMS). Once the Airman has completed the appropriate contract, the MPS must immediately email Air Force’s Personnel Center Reenlistments requesting the Airman's HYT be adjusted to 25 years of service. AFPC Reenlistments will coordinate with AFPC Retirements for approval/update of the HYT using HYT reason code of one-unique qualifications. Once AFPC adjusts the HYT, the MPS can then process the reenlistment/extension in the Military Personnel Data System (MilPDS) and the pay request in CMS.


The contract amounts outlined below are payable at Airmen's option in a lump sum or in installments (50 percent initial payment and equal annual installments on anniversary date). The MPS must document lump sum or installments on the AF Form 901, Reenlistment Eligibility Annex to DD Form 4, Section II, Block C, under “Other”.



The MPS will immediately initiate a CMS case using Critical Skills Ret Bonus (ENLISTED) to request payment for these Airmen after the Airman reenlists or enters the extension and once MilPDS has been updated to AFPC Total Force Service Center ADSC Office. AFPC Total Force Service Center ADSC Office will update the ADSC (date equal to DOE plus years reenlisting, months are not added) within three duty days and refer the CMS case to AFPC Reenl/Ext/SRBs for validation before forwarding to Defense Finance and Accounting System (DFAS) for payment processing.
