SERVICEMEMBER'S GROUP LIFE INSURANCE

SGLI

ACTIVE DUTY

SGLI/SOES

Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) is a program of low cost group life insurance for servicemembers on active duty, ready reservists, members of the National Guard, cadets in the Air Force Academy, and members of the Reserve Officer Training Corps.

SOES is the Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI) On-Line Enrollment System. It replaces the paper-based SGLI/Family SGLI (FSGLI) enrollment, maintains elections and beneficiary information, and provides 24/7 self-service access to SGLI information. SGLI provides insurance coverage to eligible members of the active and reserve components. SOES centralizes SGLI/FSGLI data into one authoritative system capable of providing consistent SGLI/FSGLI information to members and their leadership.

SOES is available through DMDC’s milConnect web application.  After signing in, click on “SOES” under the “Benefits” tab.

COVERAGE

The maximum amount of SGLI coverage you may have is $400,000. You may elect to be insured for lesser amounts in increments of $50,000. If you choose to decline or reduce your SGLI coverage, you must log into the Servicemember's Online Election System (SOES) via milConnect. If you have the maximum amount of SGLI, you have the right to retain any other Government or private insurance. However, you may not have more than $400,000 of combined SGLI and VGLI coverage.

RETIREES

VGLI

Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI) is a program that allows you to continue life insurance coverage after you separate from service.

COVERAGE

VGLI provides lifetime coverage as long as you pay the premiums. You may enroll for a maximum amount of coverage that is equal to the amount of Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) coverage you had when you separated from service. Lesser amounts of coverage are also available in increments of $10,000.

Once enrolled in VGLI, you will have the opportunity to increase your coverage by $25,000 every five years up to the legislated maximum of $400,000, until age 60. No proof of good health is required.

ENROLLMENT PERIOD

You have 1 year and 120 days from your date of separation to apply for VGLI. If you apply for coverage within 240 days of your date of separation, you will not need to answer health questions.

For more information on VGLI, please visit the VA Website.
