Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force JoAnne S. Bass recently prompted the inception of the Enlisted Assignment Working Group with the intent for an overdue holistic review of the Department of the Air Force’s enlisted assignment program.

The team was comprised of active-duty enlisted Airmen from a variety of ranks, bases and careers dedicated to analyzing policies and processes limiting modernization of the program, while finding efficiencies and areas for improvement.

“These changes are the result of Airmen from our Enlisted Assignment Working Group taking a holistic look at this process, identifying areas that needed updates and working with Air Force Personnel Center to make it happen,” Bass said. “I couldn’t be more proud of the work done to get these changes into the hands of our Airmen.”

1. Change priority code from permanent change of station Priority 4 to Priority 2 for the following Force Generation Airmen returning to their career field after serving a CONUS stabilized tour: Military Training Instructor, Military Training Leader, and Enlisted Accessions Recruiter.

2. Relieve Airmen from having a Report No Later Than Date within 120 days from the date they return from deployment.

3. Extend eligibility to qualify for expedited transfers to Airmen acquitted from General Court Martial for sexual assault and remove time on station requirement for all expedited transfers.

4. Establish an assignment swap program allowing volunteers to replace members selected for assignment, or the trading of assignments after selection. Program applies to E-8 and below in non-vectored or special-selection assignments in the same Air Force Specialty Code, skill-level, grade or projected grade, and special experience identifier.

5. Make all final Home Basing and Follow-on Assignments decisions within 120 calendar days prior to the Airman’s RNLTD.

6. Provide current assignment OPR lists to Force Support Squadrons and Military Personnel Flight leadership teams.

7. Publish myPers knowledge article on Join Spouse documentation requirements to clarify the process.

8. Publish myPers knowledge article clarifying the process for Airmen to request RNLTD/Date Eligible to Return from Overseas changes to support a pregnant civilian spouse.

Each recommendation was thoroughly researched, proposed a solution, measured the cost to implement and focused on increased quality of life, fairness in policy, monetary savings over time, and inclusion for all Airmen, no matter who they are. The remaining recommendations are being continually evaluated for potential implementation.
