Complete surprise was the feeling one teen had when he won the MyAirForceLife.com T-shirt competition at MacDill Air Force Base, Fla. recently.

Nick Berglund, son of retired Army Lt. Col. Rich and Robin Berglund, won the competition out of 61 submissions in the youth category.

Col. Lawrence Martin, the commander of the 6th Air Mobility Wing, presented the award to Nick at his quarterly town hall meeting in a packed base theater. Nick was brought by his family on the promise of seeing a free movie following the meeting.

During the Year of the Air Force Family portion of the meeting, Dora Mays and Lisa LeConte, YOAFF project coordinators, briefed competitions available on MyAirForceLife.com and how winners are selected.

Pulling out the winning T-shirt design out of a box, Colonel Martin announced he was sure MacDill had a winner. Nick was elated when Colonel Martin asked the audience if Nick Berglund was present.

Nick immediately jumped out of his seat and joined Colonel Martin on stage. "My mom told me about the contest and said I should enter, so I decided to," said Nick when Colonel Martin asked if he was surprised. "I am completely surprised that I won."

Racking up 765 out of 3,839 votes in the youth category landed Nick a fully-loaded Apple MacBook valued at $2,000 including the Adobe creative suite 4 design premium package.

Last year, Air Force Services Agency officials launched MyAirForceLife.com, an interactive site to help Airmen and their families stay connected, informed and engaged in programs as part of the Year of the Air Force Family.

"The theme of our campaign is 'The Air Force is a great place to live, work and play,'" said Mr. Mike Bensen, deputy to the commander of Air Force Services Agency. "Our focus is to make it even better for our Air Force family. The Web site highlights the core 'Year of the Air Force Family' programs and activities."

"The site features programs and competitions that will roll out through the year. We are focusing on the 'play' part of 'The Air Force is a great place to live, work, and play' campaign," said Ms. Debbie Karnes, Air Force Services Agency spokeswoman. "There's something for everyone: short story, video short, original song, and photography competition. The site also offers a place for visitors to provide quips and quotes on how the Air Force has enriched their lives in the 'Roger That' section. There's even a new, fun InstaPoll to participate in."

To find details about the current short story competition and to enter, Airmen and eligible patrons of Air Force MWR programs can log on to http://www.myairforcelife.com.

The Air Force's official Year of the Air Force Family Web site, http://www.af.mil/yoaff, contains news information and programs around the Air Force.
