Air Force Fitness Program

UNIT-LEVEL FITNESS ASSESSMENTS

In accordance with the Secretary and Chief of Staff of the Air Force’s memorandum, Squadron Revitalization Implementation Plan, dated June 1, 2018, units are authorized to test Airmen within the same unit or Personal Accounting Symbol (PAS) code effective Aug. 9, 2018. There is no change to individual physical fitness standards and tests. All other policies in AFI 36-2905, Fitness Program, will be followed.

Units electing to conduct internal testing will adhere to the following guidelines while administering official fitness assessments:

  • Squadron commanders will provide the local force support squadron with a memorandum indicating their intent, and tenant units will provide letters of intent to both the local Force Support Squadron and the parent major command/A1. MAJCOM/A1s will maintain a record of all assigned units electing to test internally.
  • Squadron commanders will execute and enforce the fitness program and administer administrative action(s) in cases of non-compliance, as appropriate.
  • Certified and appointed physical training leader(s) (PTL) will conduct official fitness assessments on a certified track or course. PTLs will continue to be trained and certified in accordance with AFI 36-2905 through the servicing FSS or Fitness Assessment Cell (FAC).
    • Unit Fitness Program Managers (UFPM) will work with fitness center staff in accordance with local policies to reserve facilities for fitness assessments.
    • All fitness assessment run/walk track/courses must be certified by local civil engineer squadrons and approved by the installation commander.
    • PTLs will administer height, weight and abdominal circumference measurements in accordance with AFI 36-2905, chapter 3, paragraph 3.6.
    • Official scores will be reported to the FAC for input into the Air Force Fitness Management System (AFFMS II). Where a FAC does not exist (geographically separated units, detachments, etc.) the UFPMs will fulfill this role. UFPMs will also maintain Fitness Screening Questionnaires.

Installation commanders and equivalents should continue to ensure equitable administration of fitness assessments across the installation by providing safe facilities, equipment, resources and funding to support the installation fitness program. This policy change will be incorporated in the next revision of AFI 36-2905.
